Artificial Intelligence Drives Massive Increase in Smartphone Sales

Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled smartphones are expected to witness a significant surge in sales and attract a wider user base, particularly in the United States and China.

According to research firm IDC, sales of AI-powered smartphones are projected to increase by nearly 350%. This growth indicates that AI-enabled phones will account for 18% of the global market by the end of the year.

For Apple, IDC forecasts a 4% improvement in sales, thanks largely to the anticipated release of the iPhone 16, which will feature AI capabilities.

In this context, Mohamed Antar, Technology Editor at Sky News Arabia, remarked that AI-enabled smartphones are becoming increasingly appealing to consumers. He added:

The ways in which AI is utilized in smartphones are still evolving and will take more time to fully develop. The issue of charging for certain AI services presents a significant challenge for smartphone manufacturers. Another important factor is the democratization of AI—this new technology should be made accessible to everyone, regardless of their social status or financial capabilities. Google is likely to emerge as the leading player in AI technology for smartphones, given that it owns the Android operating system. Google will leverage its ecosystem of products to integrate AI into our daily lives. Apple, however, is somewhat behind in this area, as evidenced by its reliance on OpenAI for its AI framework known as Apple Intelligence.

Ayman Itani, an IT expert, also shared his insights with Sky News Arabia:

AI is poised to become central to our lives across various fields. There is significant commercial interest in this new technology. While new technologies often come with high initial costs, the AI sector is currently witnessing fierce competition. ChatGPT is currently the most widely used AI tool. Additionally, there is no surplus in the chips used for AI.
