Teardown Review of the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL
Earlier today, iFixit published a teardown video of the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL, and now Zack from JerryRigEverything has also put the device through a similar process.
Disassembly Process
The teardown begins by heating the device and applying isopropyl alcohol to open it from the back. Right from the start, the repair process is challenging due to the use of uncommon screws in certain areas. Additionally, there are multiple screw sizes, which further complicates reassembly.
Battery Removal Issues
One of the most significant challenges with this device is the battery removal. As seen in iFixit's video, the pull tab fails to perform its intended function, breaking before it can be effective. This necessitates the use of alcohol to dissolve the strong adhesive holding the battery in place. Zack notes that the Pixel 9 Pro XL has the most difficult battery replacement process of any mainstream smartphone, even more so than iPhones.
Design Features
The device includes a unique design feature in the microphone hole, which prevents damage if the SIM removal tool is accidentally inserted into it. The cameras are also notably large, which somewhat justifies the size of the camera module.
Repairability Concerns
While both Samsung and Apple have made significant strides in improving the repairability of their smartphones, Google has yet to follow suit. Hopefully, we’ll see improvements in the Pixel lineup next year.
